A traditional NorthValley floor plan, the property has a wonderful kitchen with authentic Mexican tile and a hearth room with one of four wood burning fireplaces in the home. Boasts a formal dining room, formal living room that was once the property's original barn, an office and a separate den plus four bedrooms top off this home. The two additional Castias are 525 square feet and 1026 square feet respectively. Steeped with history, yet updated with refrigerated air and a new roof, city water and city sewer.LA CASA DE CANDELARIAThe Villa de Albuquerque was founded in 1705 and existed under the laws of Spain and Mexico until 1846; it was compromised of four Spanish leagues (over 17,000 acres) of land in a square body, at the center of which was the Plaza of Old Town in the Territory of New Mexico. It was bounded on the north by the Lands of Diego Montoya Grant (Rancho de Albuquerque) and on the west by the Atrisco Grant. The Town of Los Griegos was annexed to the City of Albuquerque in 1948.Old Spanish deed were recorded thin early 1900's to divide the estate of Toribio Candelaria and Manuelita Garcia del Candelaira among their heirs. In 1932, Tranqulilino Candelaira and his wife, Gavrielita Santillanes de Candelaira, deeded this property to Anita Nolasco. Later that year, she sold the western portion to Rafael Duran. When Ruth and George Dick bought the property in 1951, there were two houses with a driveway where the breakfast room and bath now stand. Older residents of the area remember the two bedrooms on the west as being used for a store and the other room for living quarters and that these two rooms were among tho oldest buildings in Los Griegos. They are built of terrones (adobes cut from the ground rather than formed). They were mudded and whitewashed inside; the two doors which may still be seen from the front of the house are typical of early construction. The living room was a stable and the feed troughs later were cut down to form the bancos under the windows. The study/bedroom off the main patio replaced a kitchen and a bath. In this bathroom, the ceiling was covered with scrim which hung down over the tub with a weight on a string, thus diverting any leaking water from the ceiling into the tub. The houses were joined together in 1957; the northeast bedroom was created from a rough storeroom, windows were replaced, and the window seat and closets were installed. At that time, the floors in that part of the house were bricked and the large window in the family room, which was salvaged from a bank in Soccorro, replaced and old exterior door which exited to a small portal to the east. The bookshelf in the family room had been inserted previously in the space where an exterior door east removed. The portal was renovated and extended in 1964 when the studio was constructed. Weather boards from the old coach house/garage were used in the studio worksroom. The carport storage building was added in the 1970's. The window in the sotreroom came from the Bernalillo County Courthouse when it was remodeled. Los Griegos Road was a winding dirt trail in the 50's. Sitting on the front wall, the Dicks would watch the funeral processions with the casket rididng in a horse drawn wagon and the wedding processions following a brass band that led to the Griegos Scoiety Hall came alive with the weekly "baile" for the neighborhood. There was the handsome, erect senor who rode his white horse down Guadalupe Trail, large white sombrero on his head and horse brasses highly polished. And there was the beautiful young Indian woman who passed by in a two-seated carriage, her black braids tied with bright yard and her turquioise jewelry gleaming in the sun.The patrona of Los Griegos informed Ruth Dick that their telephone was to be used by the neighborhood as was the custom, and that should Ruth need household or yard help, she was to tell the patrona and she would decide who could work at the house. Durning the Dicks thirty years there, they enjoyed the sotries told them by the people who "remember when my aunt lived in this house", who remember a special fiesta there and the man who came by to see how the living room fireplace was drawing because his father had built it. The old square nails which fell from unknown places were treasured by the children of Ruth and George Dick, and some of their earliest "forts" were built from the stones from foundations of other rooms on the property. The horned toads lived in the well housing and that well served both houses, as well as th two to the East and the one to the North. Then there was also their own special family of roadrunners which came each year, parading the offsrping past the open door with the latest catch of field mice or small snakes proudly displayed. In 1991, after nearly 6 years of various renters and sitting vacant the house and property were purchased by the current owner. The house had been placed on both the National and Historic state registries in 1984 however the plaques had never been purchaeed. The plaques now hang proudly in the courtyard near the entrance to the house. The western portion of the land that was sold in 1932 was also purchased and the small adobe casita was remodeled and serves as a guest house. The open fields are, for the most part, filled with homes now and Griegos road is paved. Wedding and funeral processions are motorized and Griegos Society Hall has become a private residence. But the spirit of Los Griegos exists in many polite customs that reflect easy acceptance of it's new inhabitants.
